Museo della Poesia
Cesa (Arezzo) Italy
The Museum of Poetry, located in a vast wine cellar, is filled with books and letters written by fellow poets to its proprietor, the Countess Perla Cacciaguerra. I was asked to create an installation on the site using the twenty-two giant barrels that line the walls of the cantina.
I painted each of the wine barrels a different color in order to bring light into the underground space and also to import the colors of the Val di Chiana into the interior of the Museum. I began with pale yellows and moved through the color wheel to deep violets, following the procession of the vats as they move from the entrance to the museum’s far end with its wonderful portraits of Dante & Virgil.
